Timbers and Their Properties
Beech

The Timber:
Beech is a pale timber, with a smooth texture and a typically straight grain. Beech varies in hardness and density in relation to its area of origin, for example Beech grown in Britain, Denmark and Northern Europe is darker and denser than Beech originating from central Europe.Wood Type:

The Timber:
Hemlock, more specifically, Western Hemlock is a soft brown colour, with a fairly straight grain, a smooth texture and a rather luminous finish. Hemlock is an excellent timber for staining.Wood Type:

At CV Stairs, the main use of Hemlock is in the manufacture of either solid timber staircases, or stairs with Hemlock stringers & Mdf treads and risers, suitable for carpeting. Hemlock is also used for various stairparts, including spindles, newelsand newel caps.
Oak, American White

The Timber:
American White Oak ranges in colour from soft yellowy-brown to pale reddish/pinkish brown and tends to have a straight grain. The texture ranges from medium-coarse to coarse, and its strength & durability make it more apt for constructional use.Wood Type:

At CV Stairs, the main use of American White Oakis for stairs and stair parts, for example handrails
and newel turns, however, we have developed a
range of handcrafted Oak spindles and newels with a Walnut inlay. This inlay can also be incorporated
into the treads of a staircase in various patterns
and styles.
Red Pine

The Timber:
Red Pine is a pale, knotted, straw-coloured timber with an obvious reddish tinge. Its quality (texture, density, size and number of knots) is affected bythe conditions of growth to a greater extent than most timbers owing to its broad and varied distribution.

At CV Stairs, the main use of Red Pine is in the standard range of stairparts, including spindlesand handrails. Red Pine is also often used in the manufacture of the carcass of the stair itself.
White Pine

The Timber:
White Pine is very pale yellowy-brown in colour- almost white even. It has a smooth, even texture, a relatively straight grain, and faintly visible annual rings.Wood Type:

At CV Stairs, the main use of White Pine is for the stringers of the basic White Pine & Mdf staircase. This particular stair is the most basic of specifications, and is generally painted and carpeted.Southern Yellow Pine

The Timber:
Southern Yellow Pine is a rich yellowish brown colour. It has a smooth texture, a relatively straight grain, and planed surfaces are bright and lustrous.Wood Type:

At CV Stairs the main use of Southern Yellow Pineis in the construction of staircases, be they solid Pine or a Pine & Mdf combination. If required, stair parts can be manufactured to order in either a square or chamfered design.
Sapele

The Timber:
Sapele is a dark, reddish-brown timber, very similar in colour to Mahogany. It has a fairly smooth texture with an interwoven grain, and is characterised by a distinct, even stripe, with an occasional stippled/mottled grain pattern.Wood Type:

The Timber:
American Walnut is a rich, dark, chocolate brown timber. It has a characteristically distinct grain witha smooth, even texture.
