| Sapele | Is a dark reddish/brown hardwood, typically with a regular grain pattern and often with a mottled figure |
| Southern Yellow Pine | Is a creamy/yellow-brown straight grained softwood |
| Spacers | These are the sections of timber that are used to fill in the spaces in the handrail & baserail either side of each spindle (also called Fillets) |
| Spindle | The vertical member- turned or square- that acts as the infill between the handrail and baserail |

| Straight Flight | A flight of stairs that has no change in direction. A straight flight can be finished at the bottom with a straight step, a bullnose step or a curtail step
