| Dark Hardwood | Is a dark reddish/brown hardwood, typically with a regular grain pattern and often with a mottled figure  |
| Diminishing Handrail | Is where the spindles gradually get shorter towards the top of the flight, as they meet the underside of the ceiling or a second flight stringer. Square spindles only are recommended for this configuration  |
| Dog Leg with Half Turn | A straight flight with at least 1 change in direction, separated by a half landing, forming a 180° turn  |
| Dog-Leg with Quarter Turn | A straight flight with at least 1 change in direction, separated by a quarter landing, forming a 90° turn  |
