| Carcass | The main body of the staircase, without balustrading.

| Closed Stringer | A string with the inside face(s) trenched to accommodate treads and risers so that their profile cannot be seen
|
| Continuous Handrail | Straight lengths of handrail connected with handrail fittings so that the handrail flows over the tops of the newel turns creating a continuous run of handrail
|
| Continuous Newel | A newel turn used to support a continuous run of handrail
|
| Cover Buttons/Newel Plugs | These are small plugs of timber that are used to cover or fill in any screw holes in the newel(s) |
| Curtail Platform | A double-depth tread at the bottom of the flight of stairs which has one or both ends having a half circle design. A curtail platform extrudes out past the width of the stair and can accommodate a curtail step above it

| Curtail Step | A tread at the bottom of the flight of stairs which has one or both ends having a half circle design. A curtail step extrudes out past the width of the stair

| Cut Stringer | A string with the upper edge cut away to the shape of the treads and risers so that their profile can be seen from the side. The treads will protrude over the edge of the stringer
